Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest is an upcoming live-action American fantasy movie. Takingplace three hundred years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, it will explore the story of the Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms by Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya.
Discussion of this project was first rumored in April 2023,[2] but confirmation came on February 9, 2024, when it was revealed that screenwriter Mattson Tomlin was attached to lead the project.[3] It has since developed into a movie written by Beau Willimon.[1]
History
The first attempt to pitch a prequel about Aegon's Conquest was made in 2017. In summer 2017, HBO announced that five separate prequel pitches were under consideration, none of which were ultimately greenlit. One, by Rand Ravich and Far Shariat, was about Aegon's Conquest. Their script portrayed Aegon the Conqueror as "a drunken lout," and was one of the first pitches rejected by HBO.[4]
On April 3, 2023, Variety revealed that a new prequel about Aegon's Conquest was being considered by HBO. Early talks suggested the potential for a feature component to the project, in which HBO and Warner Bros. could release a theatrical movie that would lead directly into the series. No writer was mentioned as being attached to the project at the time.[2] Following the straight-to-series order for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, then titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, on April 12, 2023, Entertainment Weekly revealed that their sources indicated that the Aegon's Conquest prequel was "not happening at this time."[5]
On February 8, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Mattson Tomlin is attached to the project.[3] Tomlin then confirmed the report to be true on his social media account.[6]
On April 6, 2024, Tomlin tweeted an image featuring a copy of Fire & Blood captioned "⚔️"[7] and replied to it with "I've got a pretty sick job."[8]
In July 2025, Tomlin tweeted he was still writing for the project. Tomlin also revealed that author George R. R. Martin has been involved in the creation of the show.[9]
