Gunthor Darklyn was the Lord of Duskendale and the head of House Darklyn during the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. His uncle was Ser Steffon Darklyn of the Kingsguard.[2]
In the television adaptation House of the Dragon, Gunthor is portrayed by Steven Pacey.
History
At the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons, Gunthor was among the lesser lords that gathered at Dragonstone and sat on the black council in support of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.[3] Lord Darklyn counted himself among Rhaenyra's greatest supporters,[2] well-aware that King Aegon II Targaryen would name him a traitor, having already received a summons from King's Landing demanding an oath of loyalty from him. Shortly after, his uncle, Ser Steffon Darklyn, defected from Aegon II's Kingsguard with the crown of Rhaenyra's father, King Viserys I Targaryen.[3]
Soon after, Ser Criston Cole led a host from King's Landing to move against the nearby lords sworn to Rhaenyra. Duskendale was among the first targets and the town's defenders were taken by surprise. In the subsequent sack of Duskendale, the town was sacked, the harbor was set afire, and Lord Darklyn was beheaded by Cole. Most of Gunthor's garrison chose to swear fealty to Aegon II, although a few followed Lord Darklyn in death.[1]
With Gunthor's death, his widow, Lady Meredyth Darklyn, took control of Duskendale.[4] Although amongst Rhaenyra's greatest supporters, House Darklyn suffered heavily for its loyalty to the princess, with Gunthor and Steffon both dying for her cause. As a result, when Rhaenyra was forced to flee to Dragonstone, Lady Meredyth reluctantly hosted her at Duskendale, but only for a brief time.[2]
