Master is a noble rank in the North and the Iron Islands, where the institution of knighthood has virtually no presence. Masters are ranked below lords and are equivalent to southron landed knights.[1]

Among the cadet branches of House Harlaw, the Harlaws of Grey Garden are an exception as the current head, Ser Harras Harlaw, is an actual knight and is thus entitled to the style "Knight of Grey Garden."
Note that some houses in the south use the style "Master" as a secondary title, such as House Velaryon, Lords of the Tides, whose head was known as Masters of Driftmark), but this is only a personal preference rather than being indicative of rank.[2]
Furthermore, the small council, a group of seven advisers who aid the monarch on the Iron Throne, includes four masters: Master of coin, Master of laws, Master of ships, and Master of whisperers.[3]
