After arriving in Lys from the Planky Town, Quentyn Martell and his party decide to switch ships to ensure that anyone following them would find it harder to keep track of their movements. They hire the Meadowlark to take them as far as Volantis.[1]
Off the coast of the Disputed Lands, the Meadowlark is attacked by corsairs. The pirates are fended off, but at the cost of nine Meadowlarks, Maester Kedry, Ser Cletus Yronwood, and Ser Willam Wells. The late Meadowlarks received more tender treatment than Quentyn's men, with the sailors sewing their bodies up in canvas and then weighing them down with ballast stones so they might sink more quickly. The captain of the Meadowlark also led his crew in a prayer for the souls of their slain shipmates, but when Quentyn and his companions are asked to say a few words about the deeds of their friends, Ser Gerris Drinkwater is forced to lie in order not to reveal their identity.[1]
