A Dance with Dragons
Quentyn travels to Essos on a mission to marry Daenerys Targaryen, Queen of Meereen. To hide the true purpose of the journey, Cletus presents himself as a merchant with Quentyn as his servant.[2]
On the way to Volantis, the Meadowlark is attacked by pirates near the Disputed Lands. Although the crew and the Dornishmen manage to win the fight, Cletus and Ser Willam Wells are killed in the battle. The sailors give them an honorable funeral, but when Quentyn and his companions are asked to say few words about the deeds of their friends, Ser Gerris Drinkwater is forced to lie in order not to reveal their identity.[2]
Having been rejected by Daenerys, Quentyn mentions Cletus and Willam while trying to convince Gerris and Ser Archibald Yronwood to aid him in claiming one of Daenerys's dragons after the queen has disappeared from Meereen. Gerris responds that doing so will not bring their fallen friends back.[6]

—Cletus to Quentyn Martell
Cletus: This will be a tale to tell our grandchildren.
Willam: A tale to tell tavern wenches, you mean, in hopes they'll lift their skirts.
Cletus: For grandchildren, you need children. For children, you need to lift some skirts.[2]

Quotes about Cletus
Cletus had been Quentyn's dearest friend for half his life, a brother in all but blood.[2]
—thoughts of Quentyn Martell
A grand adventure, Cletus called it. Demon roads and stormy seas, and at the end of it the most beautiful woman in the world. A tale to tell our grandchildren. But Cletus will never father a child, unless he left a bastard in the belly of that tavern wench he liked. Will will never have his wedding. Their deaths should have some meaning.[6]
