A poacher is someone who hunts illegally.
Customs
[edit]Lords are generally not tolerant towards poachers who are caught hunting animals on their lands.[1] An old poacher's trick is to use animal sounds to signal to each other.[2]
Punishments for poaching can include being forced to join the Night's Watch,[3][4][5] losing a hand,[3] or being forced to row ships.[6]
History
[edit]Bedwyck[7] and Will[3] were sent to the Wall after being caught poaching.
Instead of sending some poachers to the Night's Watch, Lord Jorah Mormont sold them to a slaver from Tyrosh so that he could continue supporting the lifestyle of his wife, Lynesse Hightower. Since slavery is outlawed in the Seven Kingdoms, Lord Eddard Stark traveled to Bear Island to deliver the king's justice. Jorah and Lynesse fled beforehand into exile in the Free Cities, however.[4][8][9]
