Bedwyck, nicknamed Giant due to his short height[2], is an experienced ranger of the Night's Watch. He is the smallest of the black brothers.[3]
Appearance and Character
Bedwyck is a "hair and a half" over five feet tall, and has streaks of grey in his hair, showing his age.[2] He cannot read, but can write his own name on a good day.[3]
Giant is fierce despite his size.[4] He is well-respected by younger members of the Night's Watch.[3]
History
Bedwyck is the son of a crofter. He was sent to the Wall for poaching, and has been a Night's Watch ranger for over a dozen years.[3]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
Bedwyck is part of the great ranging in the lands beyond the Wall, led by Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. He is a scout under the command of Thoren Smallwood. Due to his small stature, agility, and excellent climbing ability, Giant is used as a look-out by Jeor at Whitetree.[2]
A Storm of Swords
Giant survives the assault by wights in the fight at the Fist, and he makes his way to Craster's Keep with the other survivors. Craster mocks the efforts of Bedwyck and Samwell Tarly to keep Bannen alive.[4]
Bedwyck stays loyal to the Watch during the mutiny at Craster's Keep, during which Lord Commander Mormont is killed. Giant tries to pull the traumatized Samwell to his feet, but the youth is too heavy.[5] Bedwyck flees with Grenn, Eddison Tollett, and some others.[4] He is one of the few survivors of the ranging to make it all the way back to Castle Black.[5]
Bedwyck is part of the force that Bowen Marsh takes when he heads off to fight the Weeper at the Bridge of Skulls.[6]
Giant tells Sam about the battle beneath the Wall.[6] Giant congratulates Jon Snow after he is elected as the new Lord Commander.[7]
A Dance with Dragons
Lord Commander Snow puts Bedwyck in command of the abandoned way-castle Icemark, and gives him a garrison of thirty men. Giant's mission is to restore the way-castle, to allow patrols to move about, and put eyes on the wall for climbers.[3]
