A Storm of Swords

The great ranging of the Night's Watch is overwhelmed by wights at the Fist of the First Men. Survivors from the fight at the Fist struggle southward through the snowy haunted forest. Samwell Tarly, Grenn, and Small Paul fall behind the rearguard and find themselves alone, with the wind cold and bitter. Riding the undead horse of Mawney, the Other emerges from the forest to confront the black brothers. When Grenn threatens the newcomer with his torch, the Other cuts the torch with its sword; a screeching sound is heard when the icy blade extinguishes the flame. Paul charges in with his axe, but the Other slides away and impales the huge man through his mail. The dying Small Paul's falls on the Other, however, causing its sword to be torn from its fingers. Sam stumbles forward and stabs the Other in its throat from behind with his dagger of black dragonglass. Sam hears a cracking sound when he stabs it, then a shrill screech. The Other's armor runs down in rivulets, and the creature itself melts away, bones and all. Grenn finds that the steaming dagger is extremely cold.[1]
Sam and Grenn rendezvous with the remaining survivors at Craster's Keep. Killing the Other has earned Samwell the nickname "Sam the Slayer", but many members of the Night's Watch use it mockingly as they do not believe Sam's feat. Grenn respects the name, however. Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, discusses the obsidian weaponry with Sam. Craster and Jeor are slain during the mutiny at Craster's Keep, however.[2]
Traveling with Gilly and her babe, Sam imagines telling his father, Lord Randyll Tarly, how he killed one of the Others.[3]
Back at Castle Black, Samwell verifies for Stannis Baratheon that he slew the creature with an obsidian dagger given to him by Jon Snow. Stannis reveals he has sent word for Ser Rolland Storm to mine obsidian from beneath the Dragonmont back at Dragonstone.[4]
A Feast for Crows
Jon, the new Lord Commander, decides to send Samwell to the Citadel to train as a maester. When Sam reveals he is scared of blood, Jon reminds him that he slew an Other.[5]
Quotes

The Other slid gracefully from the saddle to stand upon the snow. Sword-slim it was, and milky white. Its armor rippled and shifted as it moved, and its feet did not break the crust of the new-fallen snow.[1]
—thoughts of Samwell Tarly
When he opened his eyes the Other's armor was running down its legs in rivulets as pale blue blood hissed and steamed around the black dragonglass dagger in its throat. It reached down with two bone-white hands to pull out the knife, but where its fingers touched the obsidian they smoked.[1]
—thoughts of Samwell Tarly
Grenn: Wouldn't you rather be Sam the Slayer than Ser Piggy?
Samwell: Why can't I just be Samwell Tarly? It was the dragonglass that slew it. Not me, the dragonglass.[2]—Grenn and Samwell Tarly
Cotter: Sam the Slayer! Are you sure you stabbed an Other, and not some child's snow knight?
Samwell: It was the dragonglass that killed it, my lord.[4]—Cotter Pyke and Samwell Tarly
