Valyrian languages
From A Wiki of Ice and Fire
Valyrian is a language family spoken mainly in Essos. All the Valyrian languages are written in a glyphic script.[1][2][3]
Known languages and dialects
- High Valyrian,[2] the language spoken by the nobility of the Valyrian Freehold. It is almost a dead language, but is still spoken by members of House Targaryen[4] and is studied by some of the nobility of Westeros[5][6][7] as well as the red priests of R'hllor.[8][9]
- Bastard/Vulgar Valyrian,[10][11] a term for any language that combines High Valyrian with other tongues. The bastard Valyrian of the Free Cities are nine tongues variously described as languages or dialects, or "dialects on their way to becoming separate tongues."[6]
Behind the Scenes
Although some words and phrases are mentioned, George R. R. Martin has not constructed any of the Valyrian languages. Conlanger David J. Peterson developed several of the languages for Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, television adaptations of the A Song of Ice and Fire universe. He has also assisted Martin with translations for the forthcoming novel The Winds of Winter.[17]
