Daenerys and her followers sail west from Qarth.
Synopsis
Having left Qarth on the three ships given to her by Illyrio Mopatis, Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons fly over the ocean. Rhaegal and Viserion often play, but Drogon prefers to hunt. The Dothraki in her khalasar dislike what they call the poison water, but Daenerys enjoys the sea and its storms.
Ser Jorah Mormont speaks with Daenerys about the behavior of dragons, and the squire Arstan Whitebeard mentions the Dragonpit of King's Landing and how Balerion was two hundred years old when he died during the reign of King Jaehaerys the Conciliator. Arstan reveals he had served during the reign of Daenerys's father, King Aerys II Targaryen. Arstan then speaks of her brother Rhaegar, how bookish he was as a child, always reading. Then one day he read something in a scroll that made him want to be a warrior, and he began training fiercely. Arstan admits that Rhaegar was a great warrior, but he won no battles. After Arlan leaves to attend to Strong Belwas, Jorah advises Daenerys to be cautious regarding the older squire.
Later in Daenerys's cabin, she demonstrates how she has taught her dragons to breath fire by saying the word dracarys, High Valyrian for dragonfire. Jorah warns Daenerys against trusting Strong Belwas, Arstan, and Illyrio. Jorah tells Daenerys that Arstan is more than he seems, and warns her not to trust him. Instead of Pentos, the knight advises Daenerys to sail for Slaver's Bay to buy Unsullied, the best trained fighting force in the world, in Astapor. He tells the tale of the Three Thousand of Qohor, where a small army of Unsullied defeated a huge khalasar trying to pillage Qohor. The Unsullied are eunuchs trained to obey orders absolutely, and the slave soldiers feel no pain. Daenerys agrees that she will force Captain Groleo to change course.
Before Daenerys can leave her cabin, however, Jorah grabs her by the waist and kisses her. Daenerys tells him he should not have done so, but Jorah talks of her vision in the House of the Undying, and how the dragon having three heads may mean that she should take two more husbands.
