A Game of Thrones

As Khal Drogo is dying of an infected wound, most of his Dothraki followers abandon the khalasar, and it splinters into a dozen smaller khalasars, led by his Kos. Only a few remain, mainly the old, the weak, and his Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen, as well as the warriors of the khas sworn to her.[3]

When Drogo dies, Daenerys forms a new khalasar[1] of the hundred[2] or fewer remaining with her.[1] She names the warriors of her khas, Jhogo, Aggo, and Rakharo, as her new bloodriders. They initially refuse because a woman, especially the widow of a khal, leading a khalasar is unheard of. However, after Daenerys enters Drogo's funeral pyre with her dragon eggs and emerges unburnt with three newborn dragons, Jhogo, Aggo, and Rakharo declare her blood of their blood. Her handmaidens soon follow, then all the rest of the Dothraki, devoted to her as they never were to Drogo.[1]

The khalasar crosses the red waste by Mel Rubi

Daenerys leads her khalasar across the red waste. As they cross the red waste, the khalasar leaves a trail of dead and dying horses behind them. The best horses of Drogo's khalasar were taken by the Khals Pono, Jhaqo, and the others. Those left to Daenerys's people are old and scrawny, sickly and lame, and ill-tempered and broken. The same is true of her people, so Daenerys resolves to be their strength and show no fear or weakness. Multiple of her people die on the trek, including an old man and an infant girl. Their horses dwindle in numbers to the point that some of the khalasar must continue on foot.[2]

The khalasar takes refuge in Qarth alongside Daenerys.[4] Their time in Qarth allows them to recover from their time in the red waste, growing plump and rested but also unruly. Because the Dothraki are a warrior people and not accustomed to staying in one place, Daenerys thinks she has lingered in Qarth for too long.[5]

A Storm of Swords

The khalasar crosses the Summer Sea from Qarth to Slaver's Bay with Daenerys. Aside from her bloodriders and handmaids, most of the khalasar remains below decks, preferring the company of their horses to the terrifying waters surrounding the ships.[6]

By the time of Daenerys's sack of Astapor, her khalasar has dwindled to eighty-three Dothraki, plus her bloodriders and handmaids. These eighty-three Dothraki include women, little girls, boys too young to braid their hair, and some warriors. About a hundred gaunt horses have survived their journeys across the red waste and the sea.[7] The khalasar has thirty-odd mounted warriors, mostly braidless boys and stooped old men.[8]

At Meereen, Daenerys's bloodriders are eager to face Meereen's champion, Oznak zo Pahl, who challenges her to send a champion and face him in single combat. Daenerys convinces them not to because her bloodriders keep the khalasar together and are too valuable to risk.[9]

A Dance with Dragons

Daenerys dispatches the warriors of her khalasar to subdue the hinterlands around Meereen under the command of her bloodriders.[10]

After Daenerys disappears from Meereen on her dragon Drogon, Aggo, Rakharo, and the rest of the khalasar are dispatched across the Skahazadhan river to search for her. Jhogo is made a captive of the Yunkai'i as part of peace attempts between Meereen and Yunkai.[11]

The elderly jaqqa rhan Rommo remains in the city and speaks for the khalasar at a council called by Barristan Selmy.[12]

Most of the warriors of Daenerys's khalasar remain across the Skahazadhan in search of their queen, under the command of Aggo and Rakharo. As a great battle outside Meereen approaches, Rommo manages to scrape together twenty riders from those left behind. Some of the warriors are old men like him, marked by deformities or past wounds. The others are beardless boys, hoping to earn their first bell and the right to braid their hair.[13]

Quotes

You will be my khalasar. I see the faces of slaves. I free you. Take off your collars. Go if you wish, no one shall harm you. If you stay, it will be as brothers and sisters, husbands and wives. I see the children, women, the wrinkled faces of the aged. I was a child yesterday. Today I am a woman. Tomorrow I will be old. To each of you I say, give me your hands and your hearts, and there will always be a place for you.[1]
