Wilbert Osgrey, also known as the Little Lion, was a knight from House Osgrey during the reign of Gyles III Gardener, King of the Reach.[1]
Character
Ser Wilbert was the youngest of five brothers and so earned the name the Little Lion in childhood. He grew to be a tall, valiant knight.[1]
History
According to a story told by Ser Eustace Osgrey, a King of the Rock, either Lancel IV Lannister or Lancel V Lannister, attempted to cut a piece out of the Reach while Gyles III Gardener, King of the Reach, was battling the Storm King in the east. It fell to Wilbert to stop Lancel as his his older brothers were off in the east with Gyles. During the battle, Wilbert came face to face with the King of the Rock. It is said the king had the Valyrian steel sword Brightroar; however, it was probably a common steel sword of the same name, which has been conflated with the Valyrian blade.[N 1] Lancel fought Wilbert for half a day, breaking the knight's shield and sword and chopping the Little Lion to bits.[1] As Wilbert was dying, however, he drove his dagger into a gap in Lancel's armor and killed the king, causing the westermen to retreat.[1][2][4]
According to Maester Yandel, Lancel IV yielded the Valyrian steel sword Brightroar.[4] When the King of the Rock invaded the Reach, Gyles abandoned his siege of Storm's End to deal with the westermen.[3] Yandel writes that Lancel died in battle at Red Lake.[4]

In the end, bleeding from a dozen grievous wounds with his own blade broken in his hand, he threw himself headlong at his foe. King Lancel cut him near in half, the singers say, but as he died the Little Lion found the gap in the king's armor beneath his arm, and plunged his dagger home. When their king died, the westermen turned back, and the Reach was saved.

- ↑ Lancel IV Lannister and Gyles III Gardener were contemporaries).[1][2] As stated by Maester Yandel, they participated in a war involving two kings from the riverlands and three from Dorne,[3] indicating an era prior to the riverlands being ruled by House Durrandon and Dorne being ruled by House Martell (centuries before Aegon's Conquest). Ser Eustace Osgrey says that Lancel IV or Lancel V wielded a Valyrian steel sword,[1] and Yandel writes that Lancel IV wielded the Valyrian steel sword Brightroar and that House Lannister had acquired the blade in the century before the Doom of Valyria (which occurred a century before the Conquest).[4] According to Elio García, before the Valyrian version of it, the Lannisters had probably wielded other swords named Brightroar, made instead of common steel, and the stories of their actions became merged with the last one (like with Ice or Lady Forlorn).[5]
