Prophet

A prophet is a person believed to be in contact with a deity or deities and to speak on their behalf.

History

In the Iron Islands the priests of the Drowned God act as prophets. According to Maester Yandel, the greatest of these was Galon Whitestaff.^[1]

In the Dance of the Dragons, during the Moon of the Three Kings, mad prophets ruled the streets of King's Landing along with mummer kings and gutter knights.^[2] One of these was known only as the Shepherd.^[3]

After nearly drowning in a storm and washing up ashore, safely and unharmed, Aeron Greyjoy underwent a spiritual reawakening, and dedicated himself as a priest of the Drowned God and prophet.^[4]

A Clash of Kings

The appearance of the red comet leads to the rise of a number of priests, preachers and prophets foretelling doom and destruction in the winesinks and pot-shops of King's Landing.^[5]

At Cobbler's Square, a begging brother of the Faith of the Seven indirectly denounces the incest between Queen Regent Cersei and Ser Jaime Lannister and accuses Cersei's son, King Joffrey I Baratheon, of being a puppet of Tyrion Lannister, whom the preacher regards as a twisted monkey demon. He also spreads the rumor of Shireen Baratheon being a monster product of Selyse Florent coupling with the fool Patchface.^[6]

Acting under orders of the Queen Regent, Vylarr leads the red cloaks in the arrest of half a dozen of prophets, who are dragged to the dungeons of the Red Keep.^[7]

Aeron Greyjoy considers himself a prophet.^[8]
