Badge of office is the badge worn by the Hand of the King, the chief advisor to the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.

[edit]The Hand's badge of office always includes a hand, though each Hand can design his own. For instance, Rogar Baratheon and Brynden Rivers used brooches of gold[1] and iron,[2] respectively, and a silver clasp has also been used.[3]

[edit]Lord Eddard Stark, the new Hand of the King, has an ornate silver hand as his badge of office.[3] When the shop of Tobho Mott is visited by Lord Eddard, Mott's serving girl notices Ned's sigil and badge of office, and Tobho Mott then quickly appears, offering wine.[4]
King Robert I Baratheon calls a meeting to demand the assassination of Daenerys Targaryen, who is now pregnant with Khal Drogo's child, but Lord Eddard refuses to participate further, removing his badge of office, declaring that he thought Robert was a better man.[3] After Eddard is injured in an ambush led by Ser Jaime Lannister,[5] Robert visits his friend and gives him back his badge of office, stating that if Eddard refuses to take it, Robert will pin it on Jaime.[6]
