Lord of the Seven Kingdoms

Lord of the Seven Kingdoms is the title claimed by the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, whose seat is the Red Keep in King's Landing.[1][2][3] The title is frequently preceded by "King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men",[4] and the king usually, though not always, bears the title "Protector of the Realm".[5] The Lord of the Seven Kingdoms is advised by the Hand of the King[6] and the small council.[7]

History

After his landing at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush, Aegon the Conqueror was crowned by his sister Visenya as "Aegon, First of His Name, King of All Westeros, Shield of His People".[8] When Aegon was anointed by the High Septon at Oldtown's Starry Sept after the Conquest, he was named "Aegon of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm".[9]

Queen Visenya decided that the Kingsguard should consist of seven members because her husband, King Aegon, was Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.[10]

While Aegon II Targaryen was declared Lord of the Seven Kingdoms in King's Landing during the Dance of the Dragons, his rival, his half sister Rhaenyra, did not claim a corresponding title when she was crowned as queen at Dragonstone.[11] Both were killed during the civil war, and Rhaenyra's son, Aegon III Targaryen, succeeded to the throne.[12]

Despite claiming authority over the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, the rulers on the Iron Throne did not rule all Seven Kingdoms until Dorne joined the realm under King Daeron II Targaryen.[13]

House Blackfyre claimed the title during the unsuccessful Blackfyre Rebellions.[14]

The title passed from House Targaryen to House Baratheon as a result of Robert's Rebellion.[15]
