Clement Piper is the Lord of Pinkmaiden Castle and the head of House Piper.[2]
Appearance and Character
[edit]Clement is short, fat, bowlegged and has red hair that is bushy and wild. His younger son, Lewys, resembles him.[3]
Lord Piper believes himself to be an honest and honorable man, and Ser Jaime Lannister considers him to be bold and not easily cowed.[3]
Recent Events
[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Ser Edmure Tully commands Lord Clement Piper and Lord Vance to guard the pass below the Golden Tooth when the Lannisters start to mass troops there.[4] While Lords Piper and Vance are guarding the Golden Tooth, their lands are raided by Ser Gregor Clegane. The Tullys have their sons, Ser Marq Piper and Ser Karyl Vance, take a small force to gather the survivors of the attack and report the crime to King Robert I Baratheon, but they are received instead by Lord Eddard Stark, Hand of the King.[5]
Ser Jaime Lannister descends on the two lords and smashes their army, with Lord Vance killed. Lord Clement is put to flight and retreats to the amassed Tully host at Riverrun, with Ser Jaime trailing closely behind.[6] The riverlords are defeated beneath the walls of Riverrun by the Lannisters, and the Pipers are burnt out of Pinkmaiden Castle by Gregor.[7]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Jack-Be-Lucky, of the brotherhood without banners, laments that his father was hanged by Lord Piper's bailiff.[8]
After his son and heir, Ser Marq, is captured at the Red Wedding, Lord Clement sends men under a peace banner to King's Landing to bend the knee to the Iron Throne in his stead.[9]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Lord Clement's younger son, Lewys, serves Ser Jaime as a squire and hostage for his father's good behavior.[10] As Jaime starts campaigning in the riverlands, he grows fond of the boy and hopes that his father stays loyal for his son's sake.[3]
Lord Piper is among the reluctant riverlords who take part in the siege of Riverrun and, along with both Lord Vances, represents the riverlords at war councils. During the first war council with Jaime present, Clement dismisses Lord Norbert Vance's idea of peaceful resolution, believing that Ser Brynden Tully has too much sense to yield Riverrun to House Frey. Clement insults Edwyn Frey and demands the return of his son, while also questioning the fate of twenty men-at-arms and five knights, Lord Piper's nephews and cousins, who had accompanied Marq to the wedding. When Edwyn gives a dismissive answer and calls them traitors, Clement challenges Edwyn who pales before him, until the more martial Ser Walder Rivers steps in. Jaime demands both men to sit, but Clement storms out of the council with Jaime reminding Edwyn that the Freys are twice as treacherous as Clement.[3]
After Riverrun surrenders, Jaime grants Clement leave to return to his own lands and promises that his kin will be ransomed back.[11]

Family
[edit]Clement Piper has at least two sons, Ser Marq and Lewys Piper,[2][3] but no daughter.[12] He also has several nephews and cousins.[3]
