Elenei is said to have been the daughter of the sea god and the goddess of the wind. According to legend, she married Durran Godsgrief, the first Storm King.

History

According to legend, in the Age of Heroes, the first Storm King, Durran Godsgrief, won the love of fair Elenei. Her divine parents forbade their love, but Durran and Elenei wed despite them. When she gave her maidenhead to him on their wedding night, committing herself to a mortal life, the gods' wrath was terrible to behold. They destroyed Durran's keep, killing all his family and the wedding guests, but Elenei protected Durran from the storm. Enraged, Durran declared war on the gods, who replied by hammering his kingdom with massive storms. Each time Durran built a castle to face the sea, the gods destroyed it.[1][2]
King Durran's lords pleaded with him to build inland, his priests told him he must placate the gods by giving Elenei back to the sea, and even his smallfolk begged him to relent. But Durran refused, and persisted building larger and more powerful fortifications. Finally, the seventh castle stayed in place and resisted the storms of Shipbreaker Bay. Some believe this is because the children of the forest took a hand in its construction, shaping the stones with magic. Others believe that a young boy who grew up to be Bran the Builder advised Durran on its construction. The truth of the matter is unknown. Nevertheless, Storm's End resisted everything the gods threw at it, and Durran reigned with Elenei at his side for a thousand years.[1][2]

Arianne Martell recalls her father, Prince Doran, and Maester Caleotte arguing with a septon about why the north and south sides of the Sea of Dorne were so different. Prince Doran Martell and his maester favored weather patterns, the way the big storms that formed in the Summer Sea would pick up moisture until they crashed into Cape Wrath, though Doran thought it was odd that the storms never struck at Dorne. The septon believed the reason was because Durran Godsgrief stole Elenei from her godly parents and earned their eternal enmity, while no Dornishman ever did so.[3]
