Cellador is the septon of Castle Black, where he maintains a small sept.[2]
Appearance and Character
[edit]A devout[3] follower of the Faith of the Seven,[4][5] Cellador wears a seven-sided crystal around his neck.[6] He frequently drinks wine[4][5] and has a strong tendency to alcoholism.[1] The septon looks down upon prostitutes[5] and considers free folk to be godless savages.[7]
Recent Events
[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Cellador attends the recruits of the Night's Watch who believe in the Faith of the Seven when they say their vows at the sept at Castle Black.[1]
After Castle Black learns of the arrest of Eddard Stark, Jon Snow's friends ask Cellador to light a candle for Jon's father.[8]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Before the attack on Castle Black by Thenns led by Styr, Septon Cellador leads the men on the barricade in a prayer to the Warrior.[9] Cellador drunkenly sings a hymn to the Mother amid Mance Rayder's siege. During the night, he loudly and drunkenly prays for the dawn to come.[4]
After the arrest of Jon by Janos Slynt's men, Cellador supports the accusations against Jon, who had taken his oath in a weirwood grove north of the Wall. Cellador doubts Jon's sincerity because he believes in the old gods also worshipped by the wildlings, but the septon's protests are overridden by Maester Aemon.[10]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Jon, the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, is met by Cellador, Bowen Marsh, and Othell Yarwyck in his chambers behind the armory. The hungover septon opposes Jon's decision to make Satin, a former prostitute, his squire. Cellador then objects to learning about wights by keeping corpses in the ice cells, as he considers wights to be abominations. The septon additionally disapproves of Jon releasing Val to find Tormund, and to bringing Tormund's followers south of the Wall.[5]
Cellador briefly attends the wedding of Sigorn and Alys Karstark, but he reenters his sept when Melisandre prays to R'hllor.[6]
Atop the Wall, a half-drunk Cellador is among those informed by Jon that Tormund will be allowed to cross south.[7]

Behind the Scenes
[edit]Given his tendency to alcoholism, Cellador's name is likely a word play on "cellar door". The said term is also widely cited by various writers, for example J. R. R. Tolkien (a known influence to George R. R. Martin),[11] as a phrase that is beautiful purely in terms of its sound.
