Layout
The reeking dungeons of Riverrun are windowless[2] and damp.[3][4] Heavy cell doors are made of wood and iron.[2]
History
Jack-Be-Lucky was once imprisoned in Riverrun's dungeons.[4]
Recent Events
A Clash of Kings
The cells below Riverrun are crowded with captives after House Lannister's defeats in the battle in the Whispering Wood and the Battle of the Camps.[3] Because of their high birth,[2] captives like Ser Jaime Lannister, Tion Frey, and Willem Lannister are kept in tower cells instead of the dungeons below.[5][6]
After a failed plot to free him, Jaime is moved to the dungeons along with other red cloaks who had arrived with Ser Cleos Frey.[5] Jaime is fettered at wrist and ankle, with the ankle chains bolted to the wall.[2]
After learning of the supposed deaths of her sons Bran and Rickon, Catelyn Stark has a flagon of wine sent to the captive Jaime in hopes it will loosen his tongue. While Riverrun celebrates the Battle of the Fords, Catelyn brings Brienne of Tarth with her to a midnight meeting with Jaime. The goaler initially blocks Catelyn, but he unlocks Jaime's cell after Catelyn invokes the name of her father, Lord Hoster Tully. Catelyn interrogates Jaime while Brienne stands guard outside the cell.[2]
A Storm of Swords
Jaime recalls that Brienne had to overcome the gaoler when Catelyn released Jaime from the dungeons.[1] As he travels toward King's Landing, the weakened Jaime feels his skills have declined from his time in the dungeon.[1][7]
