Cleos is slain by outlaws, and Brienne and and Jaime are captured by the Bloody Mummers.
Synopsis
Brienne of Tarth, Ser Cleos Frey, and Ser Jaime Lannister are still travelling to King's Landing. They visit Maidenpool, but finding the town deserted and sacked, continue on toward Duskendale. Jaime has no success in provoking Brienne into a fight. He misses his twin, Queen Cersei Lannister, and thinks back about their childhood. Even as children they were close and they slept together. Once their mother Joanna caught them. She was shocked and moved Jaime's bedchamber far away from Cersei's. Jaime muses that he should marry his sister as the Targaryens did.
While on the Duskendale road, they are suddenly attacked by archers, with Cleos struck by arrows. Jaime and Brienne charge at the archers, who run away in the forest. They go back to find that Cleos is dead; his horse threw him off but as his feet was stuck in the stirrups the knight was dragged with his head bouncing against the ground.
Jaime takes Cleos's sword and attacks Brienne. Although he is still chained he is confident that he can beat her. As they fight for a long time, Jaime is amazed at Brienne's skill with the sword and realizes that she is stronger than him. Finally Brienne forces him int a brook and beats him.
When they look up a number of men surround them. Jaime recognizes them as the Brave Companions. Their commander, Urswyck, explains that their leader, Vargo Hoat, has been named Lord of Harrenhal, and Timeon reveals that they have gone over from the Lannisters to the Starks. Rorge hits Jaime in the stomach, and four of the sellswords capture Brienne.
Jaime warns Brienne that she will be raped and advises her not to resist, as this will make it worse. He tries to save her by telling Urswyck that Tarth is called the Sapphire Isle and that Brienne will be worth a high ransom. Jaime also reminds Urswyck of the gold and power of House Lannister and Casterly Rock, but the lieutenant slaps Jaime in response.
Jaime and Brienne are brought before Vargo, who is sacking a small sept. Jaime tries to persuade Vargo to release them for a high ransom from his father, Lord Tywin Lannister. Vargo replies that he will give Jaime's father a message. Ursywkc shoves Jaime in the back, and Shagwell kicks his legs out from under him. Zollo raises his arakh and brings it down as Jaime screams.
