The dungeons of the Dreadfort are where prisoners are held by the Lord of the Dreadfort.
Layout
[edit]Kennels are located in the Dreadfort's yard, and steep steps lead down to the dungeons. The cells beneath the castle have cold, damp stone walls.[1]
Recent Events
[edit]A Storm of Swords
[edit]At Riverrun, Lothar Frey informs Robb Stark, King in the North, and his mother Catelyn of the sack of Winterfell, attributing the destruction to Theon Greyjoy and his ironborn. Lothar reports that Ramsay Snow, the Bastard of Bolton, took the women and children of Winterfell to the safety of the Dreadfort.[2] In actuality, the sack was caused by House Bolton men led by Ramsay.[3]
At the Twins, Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort, tells Robb and Catelyn that Theon is being held captive by Ramsay, his bastard son.[4] Ramsay is legitimized in the aftermath of the Red Wedding.[5]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Beth Cassel, Kyra, Turnip, Palla, Bandy, Shyra, and Old Nan are women of Winterfell now held captive at the Dreadfort.[6]
A Dance with Dragons

Theon is held captive in the dungeons; he sometimes hears other prisoners scream from nearby cells, with women screaming the loudest.[1] On one occasion Theon is allowed to escape through an open door with the help of Kyra, his former bedwarmer at Winterfell. It turns out to be a game by Ramsay Bolton, who hunts down the escapees with his dogs, the bastard's girls. Kyra is killed and Theon is soon taken back to the Dreadfort's dungeon.[1]
Ramsay tortures Theon for some time, flaying and mutilating the captive and calling him "Reek" after Ramsay's late servant.[1] Big Walder and Little Walder Frey, Ramsay's squires, are eventually sent to bring Theon to Ramsay's feast in the great hall with Hother Umber and Arnolf Karstark. When the Frey cousins arrive at Theon's cell, they find him eating a rat.[1]
Theon later thinks that "Reek" was born in the dungeons of the Dreadfort. Sent to resolve the siege of Moat Cailin, Theon worries that he will be sent back to the dungeons if he fails his mission. Ramsay instead decides to have Theon sleep alongside his hounds.[7]
