Flint is a hard[1] sedimentary rock found in the known world. Flint creates sparks when struck against steel, so flints are often carried by travelers as fire starters.[2][3] Flint can be grey[4] or black.[5]
Description
West of the kingsroad, the foothills of the northern mountains are made of flint.[4] There are flint hills[6] and ridges[7] in the haunted forest.
Flintstones are found in the western riverlands.[8]
In the Basilisk Isles, the Isle of Tears has rugged flint hills.[9]
Culture
Polished flint shines dark.[10] Some free folk warriors wield flint axes.[11]
There are multiple branches of Flints in the north. The Flint Cliffs are named after House Flint of Flint's Finger.[12]
The Flint Barracks is an old building at Castle Black.[13][14]
The eyes of Lord Gormon Peake,[15] Lord Balon Greyjoy[5], Ser Alliser Thorne,[16] Hother Umber,[17] and the High Sparrow[18] have been compared to flint. The hard Lord Alaric Stark was known for having a flinty reputation.[19]
Quotes
—thoughts of Duncan the Tall
West of the road were flint hills, grey and rugged, with tall watchtowers on their stony summits.[4]
—thoughts of Tyrion Lannister
Balon Greyjoy had always been thin, but now he looked as though the gods had put him in a cauldron and boiled every spare ounce of flesh from his bones, until nothing remained but hair and skin. Bone thin and bone hard he was, with a face that might have been chipped from flint. His eyes were flinty too, black and sharp, but the years and the salt winds had turned his hair the grey of a winter sea, flecked with whitecaps.[5]
—thoughts of Theon Greyjoy
The moon was rising behind one mountain and the sun sinking behind another as Jon struck sparks from flint and dagger, until finally a wisp of smoke appeared.[20]
