Grover Tully was the Lord of Riverrun, Lord Paramount of the Trident, and head of House Tully during the late reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen and the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.[1][5]

An old man in 101 AC, Grover was bedridden and failing by 130 AC. However, he remained a stubborn man committed to his principles.[6]

Archmaester Gyldayn wrote that the undistinguished history of House Tully was only exacerbated by the character of Lord Grover.[7]

Lord Grover supported Prince Viserys Targaryen instead of Laenor Velaryon at the Great Council in 101 AC, favoring the rights of the male claimant.[6][8] When Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen visited the Trident in 112 AC, a son of Lord Tully attempted to court the young princess, vying for her favor.[8]

When the Dance of the Dragons broke out in 129 AC, Grover wanted to support King Aegon II Targaryen and the greens, but he was too aged and his grandson, Ser Elmo Tully, kept the Tully banners at Riverrun.[6] Elmo instead later supported Aegon's rival, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Grover passed away soon after the Second Battle of Tumbleton and he was succeeded by Elmo.[9] According to Mushroom, Grover died of apoplexy at his grandson's actions.[3]

Behind the Scenes

Grover, his grandson Elmo, and his great-grandsons Kermit and Oscar are references by George R. R. Martin to The Muppets, with Lord Grover being inspired by Grover.
