Lady Butterwell was the second wife of Ambrose Butterwell, Lord of Whitewalls. Originally from House Frey, she was the daughter of Lord Frey of the Crossing, elder sister to Walder Frey, niece to Ser Franklyn Frey, and cousin to Ser Addam Frey. In 212 AC when she was fifteen, she married Ambrose in the wedding tourney at Whitewalls.[1]

Appearance and Character

The noblewoman was pink and fresh-faced when she wed Lord Ambrose Butterwell in 212 AC. Her bride's cloak was hot and heavy.

According to Ser Maynard Plumm, the girl had a secret relationship with a scullion at the Twins.[1]

History

It was rumored that Lady Frey was married off after her younger brother, Walder Frey, caught her having intimate relations with a servant, a scullion at the Twins. The story was told that they were found in the kitchens on the marble slab where dough is rolled out, both naked and covered in flour.[1]

Lady Frey wed Lord Ambrose Butterwell at Whitewalls, and during the feast the couple used a sword to cut open a large wedding pie and release the dozens of birds within it. Ser Duncan the Tall was volunteered by Ser John the Fiddler to carry her from the great hall to Ambrose's bedchamber as part of the bedding custom. Men made ribald jokes about "flouring her up and kneading her well" while they disrobed her, and Duncan became attracted to the new bride.[1]

During the tourney thrown to celebrate the marriage, Lady Butterwell's hair was limp from perspiration and she appeared uncomfortable and bored. When Duncan, competing as the Gallows Knight, greeted Lord and Lady Butterwell before his joust, the girl pushed out her chest in an attempt to impress the mystery knight. When her cousin, Ser Addam Frey, was unhorsed by Ser Uthor Underleaf, Lady Butterwell fainted and had to be helped back to her new chambers.[1]

As a result of the failed Second Blackfyre Rebellion, Ambrose was stripped of Whitewalls by Lord Brynden Rivers, and the Hand of the King allowed Lord Butterwell to keep his new bride and only a tenth of his fortune.[1]

Quotes

Lady Butterwell, the maiden bride, my darling daughter. May the Mother make her fertile. I shall want a grandson before the year is out. Twins would suit me even better, so churn the butter well tonight, my sweet.[1]

Lord Frey to his daughter

Was there any flour on her teats when you got the smallclothes off her?[1]
