History

At the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Staunton was one of the lesser lords that sat on the black council in support of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen at Dragonstone. Lord Staunton counted himself among Rhaenyra's loyalists, well-aware that King Aegon II Targaryen would name him a traitor, having already received a summons from King's Landing demanding an oath of loyalty from him. At the first meeting of the black council, Lord Staunton agreed with Princess Rhaenys Targaryen that Rhaenyra would need to win the war with her superior number of dragons.^[1]

After the sack of Duskendale, Ser Criston Cole advanced with his host towards Rook's Rest.^[3] Having already received word of Cole's march,^[4] Lord Staunton closed his gates, but could not stop the greens from burning his lands and attacking his smallfolk and herds. He sent a raven to Dragonstone when supplies ran low,^[3] and Princess Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys arrived nine days later. However, Aegon II with Sunfyre and Prince Aemond Targaryen with Vhagar joined the battle, killing Rhaenys and Meleys. Criston and Aemond then took Rook's Rest and put the garrison to the sword. Lord Staunton's head was taken to King's Landing and mounted above the Old Gate.^[3]

After his death, his widow took charge of Rook's Rest and rode from Duskendale to King's Landing with Ser Corwyn Corbray after the ascension of King Aegon III Targaryen.^[5]
