The spiked iron warhammer is a heavy weapon which Eddard Stark can barely lift.[2]

History

[edit]

The warhammer was forged for Robert Baratheon by Donal Noye at Storm's End.[3]

Robert wielded his warhammer during Robert's Rebellion. The Lord of Storm's End used its spike[4] to deal a crushing blow against Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, in the Battle of the Trident, smashing his chest, sending rubies from Rhaegar's armor into the river.[2]

King Robert used his hammer during the siege of Pyke.[5]

On Edric Storm's last name day, Robert sent his bastard son a smaller version of his warhammer.[6]

Six and a half feet tall, he towered over lesser men, and when he donned his armor and the great antlered helmet of his House, he became a veritable giant. He'd had a giant's strength too, his weapon of choice a spiked iron warhammer that Ned could scarcely lift.[2]

—thoughts of Eddard Stark

They had come together at the ford of the Trident while the battle crashed around them, Robert with his warhammer and his great antlered helm, the Targaryen prince armored all in black. On his breastplate was the three-headed dragon of his House, wrought all in rubies that flashed like fire in the sunlight. The waters of the Trident ran red around the hooves of their destriers as they circled and clashed, again and again, until at last a crushing blow from Robert's hammer stove in the dragon and the chest beneath it. When Ned had finally come on the scene, Rhaegar lay dead in the stream, while men of both armies scrabbled in the swirling waters for rubies knocked free of his armor.[2]

—thoughts of Eddard Stark

I can still knock you in the dirt. Remember that, Kingslayer. Give me my hammer and not a man in the realm can stand before me![8]

Tell me, what right did my brother Robert ever have to the Iron Throne? Oh, there was talk of the blood ties between Baratheon and Targaryen, of weddings a hundred years past, of second sons and elder daughters. No one but the maesters care about any of it. Robert won the throne with his warhammer.[9]

There is more of Rhaegar in you, I think, but even Rhaegar could be slain. Robert proved that on the Trident, with no more than a warhammer. Even dragons can die.[10]
