A scroll is a roll of papyrus, parchment, or paper containing writing.

Culture

According to semi-canon source, the arms of House Swygert are a white scroll with gold knobs on purple within a white tressure.[1] Their words are "Truth Conquers".[2]

The worn, half-rotted figurehead at the forecastle of the Selaesori Qhoran depicts an advisor with a contemplative look holding a scroll.[3]

An archmaester's key is supposed to be capable of opening any door in the Citadel, such as to locked vaults containing rare Valyrian scrolls.[4]

History

According to a lost scroll, Valyrian sorcerers believed their downfall would come from the Rock's gold.[5]

The cause of death of the High Septon who led the Faith Militant uprising (41 AC–48 AC) remains debated, with some suspecting the archmaesters of the Citadel, through the use of the dark arts, an assassin, or a poisoned scroll, as messages were sent between the Citadel and the Stary Sept during the night of the High Septon's demise.[6][7]

When he was younger, Jaehaerys I Targaryen had been fascinated by the ponderous tomes and Old Valyrian scrolls found in Dragonstone's library.[8]

Shiera Seastar was a great reader, even at an early age, spoke a dozen languages, and surrounded herself with ancient scrolls.[9]

When Wisdom Hallyne asked why their spells seemed to not be as effective as their scrolls promised, Wisdom Pollitor explained that magic began to leave the known world when the last dragon died.[10]

A Game of Thrones

Tyrion Lannister explores the Library Tower during his visit to Winterfell, where he reads a complete version of a Valyrian scroll called Engines of War.[11]

A Clash of Kings

Bran Stark and Chayle sort through scrolls rescued from the library fire in Winterfell.[12]

Samwell Tarly finds several ancient books and scrolls at the vaults of Castle Black, including scrolls from Old Valyria.[13]

While exploring Vaes Tolorro, Aggo finds scrolls within the city, dry and crumbling, not suitable for transportation.[14] Later, in Qarth, Xaro Xhoan Daxos gives Daenerys Targaryen many gifts, including scrolls from lost Valyria.[15]

A Storm of Swords

While aboard the ship Balerion, Arstan Whitebeard tells Daenerys that her brother Rhaegar was bookish in his youth, deciding to become a warrior after reading about something unknown in his scrolls.[16]

Missandei has been seen reading scrolls.[17]

Tyrion signed a promissory note to Brown Ben Plumm upon a sheepskin scroll, promising one hundred thousand dragons, fifty hides of fertile land, a castle, and a lordship.[18]

A Dance with Dragons

Books, a Volantene sellsword and a member of the Windblown, is a notorious reader, as he always seems to have his nose poked in some crumbly scroll.[19]
