A volcano is a vent or fissure in the crust of a planetary-mass object that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface.

Within Marahai's curvature are two small volcanic isles which often emit smoke and flame.[1]
History
The rise to power of the Valyrians only began when they discovered dragons lairing in the Fourteen Flames, an immense chain of volcanoes extending across the neck of the Valyrian peninsula. The Valyrians believed that dragons were the children of the volcanoes.[2] The Valyrian Freehold constructed Dragonstone beneath the Dragonmont,[3] a volcano on the island of Dragonstone in the crownlands.
In 102 BC, every hill surrounding Valyria for five hundred miles exploded, filling the air with ash and smoke and fire, with fires burning so hot that even dragons were killed. The Fourteen Flames sent molten rock a thousand feet into the air, and red clouds rained down dragonglass.[4] This cataclysm, known as the Doom of Valyria, fragmented the peninsula surrounding Valyria into numerous smaller islands, while the low-lying areas were flooded, creating the Smoking Sea,[4] which is filled with volcanoes and smoking stacks of rock.[5] It is said to boil and smoke, and to be haunted by demons.[6][7][3]
At the start of the Dance of the Dragons, six wild and semi-wild dragons—the Cannibal, Grey Ghost, Seasmoke, Sheepstealer, Silverwing, and Vermithor—made their lairs in the smokey caverns of the volcano.[8] Grey Ghost resided in a smoking vent on the volcano's eastern side.[9] King Aegon II Targaryen and Sunfyre recuperated in a hidden lair on the eastern slopes.[10]

Quotes
A pale grey wisp of smoke blew from the top of the mountain to mark where the island lay. Dragonmont is restless this morning, Davos thought, or else Melisandre is burning someone else.[11]
