When Thoren Smallwood states he would like to take an ax to the tree because of the face, Jon states that his father stated no man could lie before a heart tree and Mormont states his father said the same. Mormont asks Jon to hand him the blacked skull in the ashes inside the hollow. Jon finds another skull under it. When Mormont states that the wildings burn their dead and wishes there were a few around to ask; Jon is certain he knows why.

Thoren Smallwood, now dressed in Ser Jaremy Rykker’s armor and cloak, and looking finer dressed than Mormont, states there were wildings here a year ago. Jarman Buckwell replies that a year ago the realm was at peace. Ser Mallador Locke then adds that fewer wildings mean fewer worries. Then Bedwyck, who has climed up in a tree, states that he case a lake to the north. With three hours of light left, Mormont decides to go north and writes a note for Maester Aemon. He then gives Jon the note and tells him to find Tarly to send the message. Jarman Buckwell’s scouts ride out first, followed by Thoren Smallwood’s vanguard, next the main force, the baggage train under Ser Mallador Locke and finally the rear guard under Ser Ottyn Wythers. A total of 200 men and 300 horses.
