Lord Estermont is the head of House Estermont and Lord of Greenstone. He is the grandfather of King Robert I Baratheon and his brothers, Lords Stannis and Renly Baratheon, on the side of their mother, Lady Cassana Estermont.[2][3] His given name is unknown.
Appearance and Character
[edit]Lord Estermont is older than Lord Ardrian Celtigar;[4] Ser Davos Seaworth finds him to be an ancient, old man.[2]
The cautious Lord Estermont follows the Faith of the Seven.[2]
Ser Cortnay Penrose considers Lord Estermont to be a great lord.[2]
History
[edit]Lord Estermont's daughter was Cassana Estermont, who married Steffon Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End. Lord Estermont is thus grandfather to Robert I Baratheon, the King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men; Stannis Baratheon, the Lord of Dragonstone; and Renly Baratheon, the Lord of Storm's End.[5][2][3]
Recent Events
[edit]A Clash of Kings
[edit]Lady Catelyn Stark recognizes Lord Estermont's standard in the camp of Renly Baratheon when she arrives at the melee at Bitterbridge as an envoy for her son, Robb Stark.[6]
Renly gives command of the reserve to Lord Estermont in the coming battle at Storm's End against his elder brother, Stannis Baratheon.[7] Renly is assassinated by a shadow before the battle begins, however.[8]
Lord Estermont joins Stannis's cause after Renly's death. He dislikes Melisandre, the red priestess now in Stannis's service, and he prefers to fight under the crowned stag of House Baratheon instead of the flaming heart of R'hllor.[2] Lord Estermont approves of the fate of Storm's End being decided by single combat between one of Stannis's followers and Ser Cortnay Penrose, the castellan of Storm's End who continues to hold the castle in Renly's name, but Stannis refuses the suggestion. Stannis thinks that Lord Estermont would advise him to starve out Cortnay's garrison, which could take a year.[2] Melisandre instead sends a shadow to kill Cortnay,[2] and Lord Elwood Meadows quickly surrenders Storm's End to Stannis.[9]
The turtle of House Estermont is seen in Stannis's vanguard as it marches north from Storm's End toward King's Landing.[10] Lord Estermont publicly bends the knee to King Joffrey I Baratheon after Stannis's defeat in the Battle of the Blackwater.[4]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Lord Estermont attends the wedding of Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell;[11] Joffrey chokes to death during the feast.[12] During Tyrion Lannister's trial for murder, old Estermont testifies that he saw Tyrion pour out wine from the wedding chalice as the king was dying.[11]
Although Lord Estermont has bent the knee to the Iron Throne, other Estermonts continue to support Stannis as he travels to the Wall.[13]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Lord Estermont has apparently passed away, as Ser Eldon Estermont is now Lord of Greenstone.[14]
