The Seven Who Rode were seven knights sent by Rhaenyra Targaryen to rescue her son and heir, Prince Joffrey Velaryon, during the Dance of the Dragons. Singers have made many songs about the Ride of the Seven.[1]

During the riots of King's Landing, the Shepherd led thousands in the Storming of the Dragonpit. Prince Joffrey Velaryon pleaded that knights should be used to help the City Watch of King's Landing in dispersing the mob, but the boy's mother, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, insisted on keeping her knights back to defend the Red Keep if needed. In order to save the dragons of House Targaryen, Joffrey departed the castle on Rhaenyra's dragon, Syrax.[1]

Grand Maester Munkun wrote about the seven knights as men of honor, bound by duty to obey their queen. Septon Eustace proposes they had been moved by Rhaenyra's love for her son. According to Mushroom, however, they were dolts and dastards, eager for reward, and too dull to believe they might die. Archmaester Gyldayn, for his part, agrees in part with each the three chroniclers.[1]

Joffrey was thrown off Syrax's back during his flight over Flea Bottom, with the fall killing him. The Seven recovered most of the prince's remains from the mob which looted the boy's corpse, although Ser Gyles Yronwood, Ser Willam Royce, and Lord Commander Glendon Goode were killed during their mission.[1]

The Seven Who Rode

The Seven Who Rode were accompanied by six squires, eight gold cloaks, and twenty men-at-arms, but the names of those men are lost to history.[1]
