Valaena Velaryon was a noblewoman from House Velaryon living at the end of the Century of Blood. She was the wife of Aerion Targaryen, Lord of Dragonstone, and the mother of the three conquerors of Westeros: Visenya, Aegon, and Rhaenys Targaryen.[4][3]

History

Valaena was half-Targaryen herself, through her mother, an as of yet unidentified member of House Targaryen.[4][3]

The marriage between Velaena's grandson, Prince Aenys Targaryen, and Alyssa Velaryon was considered a cousin to cousin marriage because the bride was kin to the groom's grandmother.[7]

Quotes

He was the only son, and second child, of Aerion, Lord of Dragonstone, and Lady Valaena of House Velaryon, herself half Targaryen on her mother's side. Aegon had two trueborn siblings; an elder sister, Visenya, and a younger sister, Rhaenys.[3]

King Aegon's own mother had been a Velaryon, so the marriage was reckoned one of cousin to cousin.[7]

Behind the scenes

In The World of Ice and Fire, Alyssa Velaryon is mentioned to be Targaryen on her mother's side.[8] However, The Sons of the Dragon subsequently established her blood relation to Aenys was actually derived from his Velaryon grandmother Valaena,[9] and Fire & Blood reitereated that fact and revealed Alyssa's mother was Alarra Massey.[10]
