A battle at Kayce occurred during Dalton Greyjoy's war against the westerlands.
Prelude
[edit]Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, attacked the westerlands in 130 AC during the Dance of the Dragons, raiding Lannisport[1] and invading Fair Isle.[2] Dalton nearly captured Kayce,[3] and the Red Kraken took the widow of the Knight of Kayce as a salt wife.[4]
Lady Johanna Lannister, one of the Three Widows, led the westermen's resistance to the ironborn after the death of her husband, Lord Jason Lannister, in the Battle of the Red Fork. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Johanna agreed to make peace with the blacks during the Hour of the Wolf in 131 AC out of concern for the defense of Kayce. In return, Johanna asked for the Iron Throne to command Dalton to relinquish captured women and return to the Iron Islands.[5] Dalton ignored the regency of Aegon III, however, and attacked Johanna's shipyards when she attempted to build a new Lannister fleet.[6]
Battle
[edit]Since Ser Tyland Lannister, Hand of the King and the late Lord Jason's twin, had been unable to aid the westermen against the ironborn, Lady Johanna donned mail and marched with a host from Lannisport and Casterly Rock to protect Kayce. Singers claim that Johanna killed a dozen ironborn beneath the town's walls, though Gyldayn writes that Johanna instead carried a banner and inspired her men to victory. The ironborn raiders were routed in the battle, with Dalton's favorite uncle among the slain, and Kayce was saved.[6]
Aftermath
[edit]Victorious at Kayce, Lady Johanna next planned to recover Fair Isle from the ironborn. Her plan was betrayed to the enemy, however, and the ragtag fleet she sent was defeated in an ambush at Fair Isle. As vengeance for his slain uncle, Dalton sent the heads of Johanna's three commanders to Casterly Rock.[7]
