An ambush at Fair Isle occurred during Dalton Greyjoy's war against the westerlands.

Prelude

Dalton Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, attacked the westerlands in 130 AC during the Dance of the Dragons, raiding Lannisport^[1] and invading Fair Isle.^[2] After conquering Faircastle, the Red Kraken ransomed Lord Farman and sons back to House Lannister of Casterly Rock while keeping Lord Farman's daughters as salt wives for himself and his brother, Veron Greyjoy.^[2]

Lady Johanna Lannister, one of the Three Widows, led the westermen's resistance to the ironborn after the death of her husband, Lord Jason Lannister, in the Battle of the Red Fork. During the Hour of the Wolf in 131 AC, Johanna agreed to make peace with the blacks in return for the Iron Throne commanding Dalton to relinquish Fair Isle, surrender captured women, and return to the Iron Islands.^[3] Dalton ignored the regency of Aegon III, however, and attacked Johanna's shipyards when she attempted to build a new fleet.^[4]

Battle

After her westermen defended Kayce and slew Dalton's favorite uncle,^[4] Lady Johanna planned an expedition to recover Fair Isle in 133 AC.^[5] She discretely assembled a fleet of fishing boats and cogs by Feastfires, seat of House Prester on the mainland, and a host of a hundred knights and three thousand men-at-arms. Commanded by Ser Erwin Lannister, Lord Prester, and Lord Tarbeck, their plan was to sail across the Straits of Fair Isle at night and land on the southern coast of the island undetected.^[5]

Someone betrayed the plan to the ironborn, however, so Dalton's longships were waiting when the westermen set sail. After destroying the ragtag fleet, Dalton sent the heads of the three commanders to Casterly Rock as vengeance for his slain uncle.^[5]
