This High Septon, a common-born stonemason whose birth name was Pate, was chosen as High Septon by King Baelor I Targaryen.[2][3]
History
During the reign of King Baelor I Targaryen, the old High Septon died, and King Baelor informed the Most Devout that the Seven had revealed the new High Septon's identity to him. They promptly elected Baelor's choice to the office, a common-born stonemason named Pate.[2] Pate could carve stonework so beautifully that Baelor believed him to be the Smith in human form.[3] While a fantastic stonecarver, this High Septon was simple,[2] and could not read or write, nor remember or recite any prayers, and thus was ill suited to his new vocation as High Septon.[3][2]
He served as High Septon only for a year before a fever took him.[2] It was rumored that Prince Viserys Targaryen used his position as Hand of the King to have him poisoned, thereby sparing the realm the embarrassment of an ineffectual High Septon.[3]
