Ilyn Payne's greatswords are the greatswords used by Ilyn Payne, the King's Justice, for his executions.
About
Ilyn Payne usually straps his greatswords to a scabbard on his back.[1][2][3] Tyrion Lannister thinks that his silence is as much a part of him as the greatsword on his back.[3]
Ilyn keeps the steel of his weapons immaculate, and has never botched an execution, seldom requiring more than a single stroke to finish off his charges.[4]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Sansa Stark meets Ser Ilyn Payne, who has a large two-handed greatsword with a stained leather hilt strapped over his right shoulder to a scabbard on his back.[1]
After the arrest of Eddard Stark in King's Landing, Ser Ilyn takes the ancestral Valyrian steel greatsword of House Stark, Ice, for his own, placing it in a scabbard on his back.[2] King Joffrey I Baratheon later orders Ilyn to behead Ned at the Great Sept of Baelor, with Janos Slynt and his gold cloaks aiding him with the execution. Yoren prevents Arya Stark from watching Ilyn behead Ned with his own sword, Ice,[2] although Sansa is forced to watch, and later has a nightmare of Ilyn coming to behead her with Ice.[5]
A Clash of Kings
During the Battle of the Blackwater, Cersei Lannister has Ser Ilyn execute three servants who attempt to flee the castle. When he returns, Sansa notices blood drying on Ice, as Ilyn has not yet cleaned the blade.[6]
A Storm of Swords

Lord Tywin Lannister takes Ice from Ilyn so that Tobho Mott can reforge the greatsword into two Valyrian steel longswords.[7] Tywin then gives a new blade to Ilyn,[8] a silver greatsword bright with runes, with the pommel being a chunk of dragonglass carved in the shape of a grinning skull with ruby eyes.[3]
Even though King Joffrey receives one of the new Valyrian steel longswords from Tywin as a wedding gift,[9] Joffrey and his bride Margaery Tyrell instead decide to use Ilyn's new silver greatsword to cut the great pie in their wedding feast. When Tyrion Lannister sees Ilyn's new greatsword, he regrets not having sent Ice back to Robb Stark.[3]
A Feast for Crows
Having lost his sword hand, Ser Jaime Lannister chooses Ser Ilyn as his sparring partner because Ilyn cannot talk, read, or write. Ilyn bests Jaime in their session with blunted tourney swords, but Jaime is determined to improve by continuing their sparring each night.[4] At Harrenhal, Jaime has Ilyn execute one of the Mountain's men for having raped Pia.[10] When they arrive at the siege of Riverrun, Jaime finds Lord Edmure Tully with a rope around his neck for days, so he orders Ilyn to cut him down from the gallows.[11]
Known Ilyn Payne's greatswords
Ilyn Payne has had three greatswords so far:
- First greatsword, which has a stained leather hilt[1]
- Ice, the ancestral Valyrian steel greatsword of House Stark[2]
- Silver greatsword, whose pommel is a chunk of dragonglass carved in the shape of a grinning skull with ruby eyes[3]
Quotes
He had been too young to have known Ser Ilyn before he'd lost his tongue. He would have been a different man in those days, but now the silence is as much a part of him as those hollow eyes, that rusty chainmail shirt, and the greatsword on his back.[3]
—thoughts of Tyrion Lannister
Joffrey and Margaery joined hands to lift the greatsword and swung it down together in a silvery arc. When the piecrust broke, the doves burst forth in a swirl of white feathers, scattering in every direction, flapping for the windows and the rafters. A roar of delight went up from the benches, and the fiddlers and pipers in the gallery began to play a sprightly tune.[3]
