Kyle Royce was a member of House Royce during the reign of King Aerys II Targaryen.[1] His relation to Yohn Royce, the Lord of Runestone, is unknown.

History

Kyle Royce may have been the son of a lord.[N 1]

When news of Lyanna Stark's kidnapping by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen reached her brother, Brandon Stark, he raced off to King's Landing accompanied by a party of nobles, which included Kyle. Brandon and his party rode into the Red Keep demanding Rhaegar's head. King Aerys II Targaryen had them all arrested and demanded that their fathers come to King's Landing to answer for their sons' crimes. When they arrived, all were killed without proper trial, fathers and sons both, save for Ethan Glover.[1]

Brandon Stark rides to King's Landing with four companions, including Kyle Royce, from Game of Thrones: Histories & Lore

Catelyn Stark and Jaime Lannister discuss the death of Brandon Stark in the dungeons of Riverrun. Jaime recalls that the four companions of Brandon Stark were sons of lords too. Catelyn identifies the men as Ethan Glover, Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, and Elbert Arryn, and finds it queer that she still remembers their names.[1]

Quotes

Jaime: He rode into the Red Keep with a few companions, shouting for Prince Rhaegar to come out and die. But Rhaegar wasn't there. Aerys sent his guards to arrest them all for plotting his son's murder. The others were lords' sons too, it seems to me.
Catelyn: Ethan Glover was Brandon's squire. He was the only one to survive. The others were Jeffory Mallister, Kyle Royce, and Elbert Arryn, Jon Arryn's nephew and heir. Aerys accused them of treason and summoned their fathers to court to answer the charge, with the sons as hostages. When they came, he had them murdered without trial. Fathers and sons both.[1]

Notes

  1. ↑ Jaime Lannister recalls that Brandon Stark's companions were the sons of lords.[1] However, Elbert Arryn's father was never a lord,[2] the heads of House Glover, while sometimes mistakenly thought of as lords by characters,[3][4] are actually the Masters of Deepwood Motte rather than lords,[5] and Jeffory Mallister's identity as the son of a lord is also unclear, meaning Jaime may be incorrect where Kyle Royce is concerned as well. If he is the son of a lord, his father could have been a Lord of Runestone or a possibly a lord of the junior branch.
