Oswell Kettleblack, called Oswell[4] and Kettleblack,[2] is a member of House Kettleblack and the father of Ser Osmund, Ser Osfryd, and Ser Osney.[1] He is a man-at-arms in the service of Lord Petyr Baelish.[2]
Appearance
[edit]Oswell is a grizzled[2] old man, who is tall and gangling.[4] He has a windburnt face, crooked teeth, and huge knuckled hands.[1] Oswell has long white hair and a hooked nose;[4] his sons share his nose and smile.[1]
Oswell is stronger than he looks, and has a fierce voice.[4] His speech sounds lowborn.[1]
History
[edit]Oswell has been in the service of Lord Petyr Baelish for a long time.[5] His three sons have known Petyr since they were children.[6][7]
Recent Events
[edit]A Storm of Swords
[edit]In King's Landing, King Joffrey Baratheon dies at his own wedding feast, and Sansa Stark escapes the Red Keep with Ser Dontos Hollard. Dontos brings Sansa down to the shore of the Blackwater Rush, where a cowled Oswell waits for them in a small skiff. Oswell rows them to the Merling King in Blackwater Bay, where Lord Petyr Baelish and Ser Lothor Brune await. After Sansa and Oswell board the galley, Petyr has his men shoot Dontos with crossbows and set the skiff afire.[4]
Merling King sails to the Vale of Arryn. When they arrive at the Fingers, Oswell and Lothor row Sansa and Petyr ashore. Peter talks with Sansa about his plan to poison Joffrey, and reveals that he secretly hired dwarf entertainers to antagonize Tyrion Lannister and frame him for the murder. Petyr further reveals that he has secret friends in King's Landing; he has Sansa examine Oswell, and she eventually recognizes him as a Kettleblack. Petyr reveals that when he learned Tyrion's man Bronn was seeking hired swords, he advised Oswell to send his sons Osmund, Osfryd, and Osney to King's Landing.[1] Bronn secretly paid the brothers to work for Tyrion, and Ser Lancel Lannister hired the brothers to serve Queen Cersei Lannister.[8] However, neither Cersei or Tyrion were aware of the Kettleblack brothers' connection to Petyr.[1]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]When Lord Nestor Royce arrives at the Eyrie, Petyr has Oswell escort Nestor's retinue to the Lower Hall.[5] Petyr confirms that Oswell is aware of Sansa's identity.[5]
At the Gates of the Moon, Petyr tells Sansa that Oswell has heard interesting news from the crew of the Merling King, which has returned to Gulltown[9] after sailing to Braavos.[1]
A Dance with Dragons
[edit]Aboard the Selaesori Qhoran in the Summer Sea, the dwarf entertainer Penny mentions to Tyrion Lannister that she and her brother Oppo had been hired in Pentos to joust at King Joffrey's wedding feast, by a man whose name was something like Osmund or Oswald.[10]
The Winds of Winter

At the Gates of the Moon, the night before the start of the tourney to choose the Brotherhood of Winged Knights, Oswell arrives from Gulltown on a lathered horse. He breaks his fast with Petyr Baelish, talking of what he learned in Gulltown.[11]
