The keep of Riverrun is the redoubt of House Tully at Riverrun.
Layout
[edit]The central[1] keep of Riverrun looms over the lower bailey of the castle.[2] The shortest way from the Great Hall to the keep is through the godswood.[1]
The three-sided keep has massive sandstone walls and a spiral stair.[2] The winding turret steps lead up to the roof,[3] which gives a view of the surrounding territory.[3][4]
The solar of Hoster Tully, Lord Paramount of the Trident, is likewise three-sided,[2] and has a stone balcony with a rough stone balustrade[4] which juts out eastward with a view of where the Tumblestone and the Red Fork meet.[2] The bedchamber, found half a turn up the stair from the solar, is dominated by a great canopied bed with pillars carved to resemble leaping trout.[4] The bedchamber has a shuttered window with a view of the yard below.[5]
History
[edit]Catelyn Tully was born in the canopied bed in the bedchamber of her parents, Lord Hoster Tully and Lady Minisa Tully.[4] Lord Tully enjoys sitting near a window in the solar, as it has a view of the Red Fork below.[5] Edmure Tully and Hoster's ward, Petyr Baelish, once built a castle of wooden blocks in the solar while playing as children.[5]

Lord Hoster Tully remains bedridden in his chambers as war breaks out. Following, the Battle of the Camps, Catelyn Stark visits her father as he rests on his balcony.[2]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Catelyn visits the sleeping Hoster in his solar after Robb Stark, the new King in the North, holds court in the Great Hall of Riverrun. She speaks with her uncle, Ser Brynden Tully, as Hoster rests.[1]
Catelyn returns to her father's chambers after she returns from Storm's End; Hoster confuses her for Lysa.[6]
Catelyn watches part of the Battle of the Fords from atop the keep's roof. After learning Lord Tywin Lannister is marching away to the southeast, Catelyn looks at a heavy leatherbound book of maps in Hoster's solar.[3]
Catelyn sits by her sleeping father after learning of the supposed deaths of her sons, Bran and Rickon Stark.[7]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]Ser Desmond Grell and Utherydes Wayn have confined Catelyn to Hoster's chambers in response to her release of Ser Jaime Lannister from the dungeons. Catelyn moves her belongings to Hoster's bedchamber, while Lord Tully's sickbed is moved to his solar near the balcony. Catelyn hears Hoster beg for forgiveness and say the word "Tansy". Catelyn watches from the balcony to see if Ser Robin Ryger will return with Jaime. Ser Edmure Tully visits Catelyn after returning from the Battle of the Fords.[4]
When Catelyn visits her father after the execution of Lord Rickard Karstark, Vyman warns her that Hoster does not have much time left. Jeyne Westerling, Robb's new queen, visits the solar to speak with Catelyn.[8] Lord Tully eventually passes away of natural causes,[9] and Catelyn and Robb are killed in the Red Wedding.[10]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Jaime resolves the siege of Riverrun and stays in Hoster's chambers during the transfer of the castle to its new lord, Emmon Frey. Jaime meets with the captive Edmure, Lord Emmon, and Emmon's wife, Jaime's aunt Genna, in the solar; Emmon is furious that Ser Brynden Tully was able to escape Riverrun. When they are alone, Edmure expresses his disapproval for Jaime occupying his father's rooms. Jaime then meets with Sybell Spicer and her daughter Jeyne Westerling, Robb's former queen.[5]
Jaime has a dream in which he is visited by his late mother, Joanna Lannister. When he wakes, he finds snow falling upon Riverrun. The next morning Maester Vyman brings Jaime a letter from his sister, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, begging for his help and expressing her love for him. Jaime, angry after having learned of Cersei's infidelity, refuses to send a response, and instead has his squire, Josmyn Peckledon, burn the letter in the hearth.[5]
