The Sealord's menagerie is a famous collection of animals owned by the Sealord of Braavos.[1]
Description
[edit]The magnificent beasts and birds, originating from throughout the known world, live in a menagerie at the Sealord's Palace in Braavos.[2] Braavosi ship captains often bring strange new animals they have found on their travels to the Sealord's menagerie.[1]
History
[edit]In 54 AC, Elissa Farman sold three stolen dragon eggs to the Sealord of Braavos, whose menagerie was famous.[3]
During Lord Alyn's attack in the Daughters' War in 133 AC, House Velaryon captured an elephant which had been meant for the Sealord's menagerie. On Lord Alyn Velaryon's return to King's Landing, he rode the elephant through the River Gate up to the Red Keep while thousands of people lined the streets hoping to see their new hero. Alyn gifted the elephant to King Aegon III Targaryen, but Lord Manfryd Mooton returned the elephant to the Sealord as part of his diplomatic efforts to prevent war.[4]

[edit]A Game of Thrones
[edit]Syrio Forel tells Arya Stark about the various unusual animals he has seen in the Sealord's menagerie. He explains that one day, the First Sword of Braavos was recently dead, and the Sealord sent for Syrio. Many other bravos had been sent for, and then sent away, with no explanation given. When Syrio arrived at the palace, the Sealord was seated with a fat yellow cat in his lap. The Sealord claimed that the animal had been brought to him by a captain from an "island beyond the sunrise", and asked Syrio if he had ever seen anything like her. While the other bravos had described it as a large and fabulous beast with unusually small ears, Syrio was the only one to recognize the truth, and replied that it was merely a fat tomcat from the alleys of Braavos whose ears had been chewed away from kitten fights. To this, the Sealord laughed, and made Syrio his new First Sword.[1]
Quotes
[edit]Hear me. The ships of Braavos sail as far as the winds blow, to lands strange and wonderful, and when they return their captains fetch queer animals to the Sealord's menagerie. Such animals as you have never seen, striped horses, great spotted things with necks as long as stilts, hairy mouse-pigs as big as cows, stinging manticores, tigers that carry their cubs in a pouch, terrible walking lizards with scythes for claws. Syrio Forel has seen these things.[1]
