Varys's chambers

Varys's chambers are the residence of Lord Varys, master of whisperers, within the Red Keep.
Layout
Located down a short flight of steps under the north wall of the Red Keep, Varys's apartments consist of three windowless chambers, sparse and small, with a hearth. Varys sleeps on a stone bed in a narrow sleeping cell. Secret steps are found below the bed, which can be raised through a counterweight.[1]

A Storm of Swords
Tyrion Lannister sneaks into Varys's chambers and awaits the return of the master of whisperers from a visit with Lord Tywin Lannister, Hand of the King. Although Tyrion thinks there are hidden doors in the residence, he is unable to find any.[1]
Varys brings Shae, Tyrion's paramour, to his abode. Tyrion finds Varys disguised as a woman when he returns to the eunuch's chambers; Varys disappears so that the lovers can have a tryst. While Varys is away, Shae reveals to Tyrion that there are secret steps found underneath the stone bed; the bed floats up when Varys presses a certain place. Varys had told Shae the bed rises because of a spell, but Tyrion believes it does so through a counterweight.[1]
Tyrion is condemned for the murder of King Joffrey I Baratheon.[2] Having decided to help his brother Tyrion escape, Ser Jaime Lannister waited for Varys to return to his chambers and then threatened the eunuch with a knife.[3] Varys helps Jaime to free Tyrion from the black cells, and then guides the dwarf through the Red Keep's secret tunnels. However, Tyrion chooses to ascend the Tower of the Hand, where he strangles Shae and then shoots Lord Tywin with a crossbow.[2]
A Feast for Crows
After the bodies of Shae and Tywin are found in the Tower of the Hand, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister orders Ser Meryn Trant of the Kingsguard to bring her Varys.[4] The master of whisperers has disappeared, however.[5]
Qyburn, Varys's successor on the small council,[6] spends much of his time in the dungeons.[5][7]
