Maester Vyman prepares dreamwine and milk of the poppy for the ailing Hoster Tully, Lord of Riverrun.[1]
A Clash of Kings
Vyman prepares the map depicting the borders of the riverlands claimed by Robb Stark, King in the North and King of the Trident.[4]
Vyman treats the wounds of Delp after the failed plot to free Jaime Lannister by Lannister agents.[5]
When Hoster's daughter, Lady Catelyn Stark, returns to Riverrun from Storm's End, Vyman informs her that it will not be long before Hoster passes away. The maester suggests that a rider be sent to inform Ser Brynden Tully, Hoster's brother, and that Lysa Arryn, Hoster's younger daughter, be informed as well.[5]
Catelyn has Vyman send a raven to Ashemark after Riverrun learns of the fall of Storm's End to Stannis Baratheon.[3]
When Vyman receives word that Bran and Rickon Stark are dead at Winterfell, he brings the letter to their mother, Catelyn. She declines Vyman's offer of a sleeping potion and instead tells the maester to join those in the yard outside celebrating the Battle of the Fords.[6]
A Storm of Swords
Ser Desmond Grell, castellan of Riverrun, has Catelyn detained in Hoster's chambers for having released Ser Jaime Lannister from the dungeon. Vyman tells Desmond and Utherydes Wayn, the castle's steward, about the losses of Bran and Rickon. Catelyn tells Vyman that Lord Hoster has been repeating the word "Tansy". Vyman later asks Utherydes if he recognizes the name, but the steward has no knowledge of any servant having been named Tansy at Riverrun.[7] Vyman sends a letter from Catelyn to Lysa at the Eyrie,[7] but Riverrun receives no response.[8]
Although he has been told not to speak with Catelyn, Vyman informs her that Lord Tywin Lannister left the riverlands after the Battle of the Fords, and that her son Robb was wounded during the storming of the Crag.[7] Vyman later confines in Catelyn that Ser Robin Ryger failed to recapture Jaime, but he refuses to say why a contingent of Freys left Riverrun in anger.[9]
Robb frees Catelyn from detainment when he returns from the westerlands.[9] Despite Vyman's best efforts,[7][10] Hoster passes away.[8]
A Feast for Crows
Ser Jaime Lannister resolves the siege of Riverrun. After the castle passes from House Tully to House Frey of Riverrun, Vyman remains in service to its new lord, Emmon Frey.[2]
When a message comes to Riverrun from Qyburn in King's Landing, Maester Vyman reads its contents, which happens to be Queen Regent Cersei Lannister begging for help from Jaime and declaring her love for her twin. A pale-faced Vyman brings the message to Jaime, who has occupied Hoster's chambers. When the maester asks Jaime if he wishes to answer, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard declines and has his squire, Josmyn Peckledon, burn the letter.[2]
