The storming of the Crag,[3][2] conquest of the Crag,[4] or taking of the Crag[4] is the final Stark victory in the westerlands during the War of the Five Kings.
Contents
Prelude
After the taking of Ashemark, along with other westermen castles and three gold mines[5] the Starks move on to the Crag[6] as part of King Robb Stark's plan to draw Lord Tywin Lannister west and out of the riverlands.[2] The castellan of the weakly-garrisoned castle is Ser Rolph Spicer.[2]
Battle
The Crag is stormed at night. While Smalljon Umber and Black Walder Frey lead scaling parties over the walls, Robb breaks through the main gate with a ram but takes an arrow wound. Grey Wind, Robb's direwolf, kills a man during the assault.[2]
Aftermath
Robb is nursed back to health by Lady Jeyne Westerling. After hearing of the supposed deaths at Winterfell of his brothers, Bran and Rickon, Robb deflowers Jeyne, and, to spare her dishonor, marries her shortly thereafter. As a consequence of that, the Westerlings join with House Stark.[2] However, by marrying Jeyne, Robb breaks his alliance with House Frey.[7][8]
Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Houses Flint of Flint's Finger, Hornwood, Manderly & Mollen are not directly mentioned at this battle. However as they were all a part of Robb's host that took part in the earlier battles at the Whispering Wood and the Camps, and as Robb takes most of his host with him into the westerlands, it can be assumed these houses were present with Robb throughout his westerlands campaign as well.
- ↑ House Flint of Widow's Watch is not directly mentioned at this battle. However as they were a part of Robb's host that gathered in the North, it can be assumed they were present at subsequent battles in the riverlands and westerlands.
- ↑ House Slate is not directly mentioned at this battle. However it is stated by Lady Dustin in A Dance with Dragons that the Slates campaigned in the riverlands & westerlands with Robb Stark.[1] Therefore it can be assumed that Slates were present at this battle.
