In the books the POV characters can be divided into three broad categories:
* Prologue/epilogue POV characters: These are the characters whose perspective the prologue and epilogue chapters of each book have been told from. So far each book has had a prologue, whilst only the ''[[A Storm of Swords]]'' and ''[[A Dance with Dragons]]'' have had an epilogue.
* Major POV characters: These are the main POVs from whom the bulk of the story has been related. Each main POV chapter is headed simply by the character's name.
* Minor POV characters: Introduced in ''[[A Feast for Crows]]'', this category includes POV chapters from minor characters rather than the major protagonists of the series. They are differentiated from the main POVs by having a descriptive title rather than just a name. As the books progress however, the distinction between major and minor characters is blurred; some less frequent POVs<ref name=MelisandreVictarion /> have their names as chapter titles, whereas some more frequent ones<ref name=TheonArya /> are given descriptive titles.

Chapters of A Song of Ice and Fire are presented through different POV characters. Point of view is the way a story is written, determining through whose perspective the story is told. George R. R. Martin adheres to third-person narration. In each chapter the reader is presented with the thoughts of one particular character, but not the thoughts of other characters appearing within the chapter. The differing, sometimes conflicting, points of view within A Song of Ice and Fire present a multi-faceted view of the story.

Although most POV characters have been featured in multiple chapters, the prologues of the published books and the epilogues of A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons feature characters whose points of view have only been featured once. Beginning in A Feast for Crows, some chapters are headed with a descriptive title rather than the POV character's name, although Martin has not yet explained why.[1] The Dunk and Egg novellas have thus far been from the perspective of Duncan the Tall.
