Mordane is the septa at Winterfell. She serves as tutor to the Stark girls, Sansa and Arya.[2]
In the television adaptation Game of Thrones, Mordane is portrayed by Susan Brown.
Appearance and Character
[edit]Mordane has a bony face and sharp eyes. The septa has a thin, lipless mouth. She starches her skirts.[3]
While strict, Mordane is a good woman who cares about both Sansa and Arya.[4] She finds Sansa to be a delightful student, but is often exasperated with Arya's antics and rebellious nature.[3][4]
History
[edit]Mordane has tutored Sansa and Arya Stark in the gentle arts and turning them into noblewomen.[3][5] When Arya wanted to go boar hunting in the wolfswood, Mordane explained that boar hunting was not for ladies.[6] Arya has often daydreamed when Mordane tries to teach the girls about noble houses.[7]
Mordane once went to the market square of the winter town with Lady Catelyn Stark, Bran Stark, and Hodor. The simple Hodor wandered off, and when they eventually found the stableboy he was being teased with sticks by youths.[8]

Mordane presides over the needlework with Princess Myrcella Baratheon, Beth Cassel, Jeyne Poole, Sansa Stark, and Arya Stark. When Mordane admonishes Arya for her poor needlework, Arya becomes angry and embarrasses herself in front of the princess.[3]
When Lord Eddard Stark is appointed Hand of the King, Mordane goes south to King's Landing in his entourage, to watch over his daughters.[5] The septa criticizes how Arya messily packs for the journey.[9] Arya screams at Mordane and refuses to unlock her door while examining Needle, so Lord Stark has his daughter apologize to the septa.[4]
Mordane accompanies Sansa and Jeyne to the Hand's tourney, where she approves of Sansa's composure during the tilts. Mordane escorts Jeyne away after she becomes hysterical watching Ser Hugh die in a tilt. After the septa returns, she introduces Petyr Baelish to Sansa.[10] Later, at the feast, Mordane and Sansa have seats of high honor by Prince Joffrey Baratheon. Mordane spills wine on herself while laughing at Moon Boy's antics. The septa drinks too much and falls asleep at the table, leaving Sansa to be escorted back to the castle by Sandor Clegane.[10] Mordane is ill the final day of the lists.[11]
When Arya goes missing in the Red Keep, Mordane prays in the royal sept for the girl's return.[12] The septa is in attendance with Sansa when Eddard holds court as Hand,[13] and she complains of sore feet from standing in the gallery of the throne room.[14]
Lord Stark intends to send Mordane back to Winterfell with his daughters.[14] Mordane is killed, however, along with most of the other members of Eddard's household, after he is arrested for treason. Her head is mounted on a spike atop the Red Keep.[15]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Sansa misses Mordane while a captive of the Lannisters.[16] The late septa is among those for whom Sansa sings during the Battle of the Blackwater.[17]
A Storm of Swords
[edit]After Sansa is forced to wed the disfigured Tyrion Lannister, she recalls Mordane's teachings that all men are beautiful and thus tries to find the beauty in her new husband.[18]
