The Smiling Knight was an infamous outlaw and robber knight of the Kingswood Brotherhood.[2] His given name has not been published.
Appearance and Character

Ser Jaime Lannister recalls the Smiling Knight as having been fearless and chivalrous, yet also mad and cruel.[2]
Jaime thinks of the Smiling Knight as his generation's Gregor Clegane in terms of men's eagerness to best him in combat.[1]
Half the size of Gregor,[1] the Smiling Knight wielded a longsword.[2]
History
[edit]During the time of the Kingswood Brotherhood, the Smiling Knight killed Ser Victor Tyrell, a cousin of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden.[3] While rescuing Lady Jeyne Swann and her septa from the outlaws, Ser Barristan Selmy of the Kingsguard defeated the Smiling Knight and slew Simon Toyne, chief of the Brotherhood.[2]
Jaime Lannister, then a squire of Lord Sumner Crakehall and part of Ser Arthur Dayne's campaign against the Brotherhood, desired to be the one to slay the Smiling Knight in combat,[1] and the youth held his own in a clash against the outlaw.[2] Arthur next fought an extended exchange with the Smiling Knight until the outlaw bled from a dozen wounds. The chivalrous Arthur paused their fight and allowed the Smiling Knight to take a fresh blade to replace his notched longsword. The mad outlaw did so, but remarked that it was Arthur's famous sword, Dawn, that he truly desired. The Smiling Knight was then slain by Arthur, the Sword of the Morning.[2]
Ulmer of the Kingswood has often told the men at Castle Black about his adventures with the Smiling Knight and other outlaws from the Brotherhood.[4]
