The tiger cloaks are the city guard of the Free City of Volantis and serve its ruling triarchs. Their name comes from the militant tiger party. They are slave soldiers and have green tiger stripes tattooed across their cheeks, of which they are fiercely proud. They wear helms fashioned to appear like tiger masks and steel claws jut from their gauntlets. Around half worship R'hllor, but who the rest worship is not mentioned.

On their way to Selhorys Tyrion Lannister and Haldon pass through a gate where a squad of Volantene spearmen stand guard. Torchlight gleams off their gauntlets' steel claws. Tyrion asks himself if they yearn for freedom, wondering:

What would they do if this child queen bestowed it upon them? What are they, if not tigers? What am I, if not a lion?[1]

One of the tigers roughly rubs Tyrion's head and remarks it is good luck to rub the head of a dwarf. Tyrion is too startled to resist.
