Aron Santagar is a knight from House Santagar and the master-at-arms at the Red Keep.

[edit]According to Ser Rodrik Cassel, Aron is a vain but honest man.[2]
Recent Events

[edit]When Lady Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik Cassel go to King's Landing in search of the owner of the Valyrian steel dagger used by the catspaw who attempted to kill Bran Stark, Rodrik visits Aron, who as master-at-arms might recognize it, in the armory. The two knights then drink in the common room of the old inn on Eel Alley where Catelyn and Rodrik are staying.[2]
Aron participates in the Hand's tourney. His joust against Lothor Brune ends in a draw after three tilts, and Aron is then defeated by Lord Jason Mallister.[3]
Wishing to participate in the melee of the Hand's tourney, King Robert I Baratheon insults his squires, the cousins Tyrek and Lancel, for not being able to fit armor on the fat king, and then sends them off to get a breastplate stretcher from Santagar. Lord Eddard Stark smiles at the thought of the boys asking for the non-existent device.[4]
During the first court session of King Joffrey I Baratheon after the death of his father, King Robert, Sansa Stark thinks that Aron is gloomy.[5]
A Clash of Kings
[edit]Aron gives a blunted silver longsword with a leaf-shaped blade to Prince Tommen Baratheon when the boy practices against a quintain.[6]
Aron is part of the retinue which attends Princess Myrcella Baratheon's departure for Dorne, and he and Ser Balon Swann bear King Joffrey's banners. When the riots in King's Landing break out, Tyrion Lannister sees Aron pulled from his saddle by smallfolk, who tear away the Baratheon banner. Four men use a cobblestone to crush Aron's head within his helmet. Sandor Clegane guts one of Aron's attackers, but not in time to save the master-at-arms.[7]
A Feast for Crows
[edit]Brienne of Tarth learns that Podrick Payne had been training with Aron until the master-at-arms was killed in the bread riots.[8]
Since Aron's position has not yet been replaced, Queen Regent Cersei Lannister considers naming a Dornishmen the new master-at-arms to ease tension with House Martell.[9]
Family
[edit]Aron's relation to Ser Symon Santagar, the Knight of Spottswood, is unknown.
