Marshal of the Northmarch is a title once held by the head of House Osgrey;[1] the Osgreys defended the northern regions of the Kingdom of the Reach.
History
[edit]According to Ser Eustace Osgrey, House Osgrey were Marshals of the Northmarch for a thousand years before Aegon's Conquest.[1] During the reign of Gyles III Gardener, King of the Reach, Ser Wilbert Osgrey defended the Reach when Lancel IV Lannister, King of the Rock, invaded the realm. The two nobles slew each other in combat.[1][2]
Eustace claimed it was the Field of Fire during Aegon's Conquest where the Osgreys began to dwindle and diminish, until they were no more than landed knights bound in fealty to House Rowan.[1]

Behind the scenes
[edit]In the original printing of The Sworn Sword in the Legends II anthology, Marshal of the Northmarch was spelled as "Marshall of the Northmarch." This was adjusted to Marshal of the Northmarch in the 2015 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms collected edition.
