TV series Game of Thrones: Season 6

Melessa Florent is a noblewoman of House Florent, the middle child and eldest daughter of Lord Alester Florent of Brightwater. She is married to Lord Randyll Tarly and the mother of Samwell, Talla, and Dickon Tarly, as well as two other daughters.[3]

In the television adaptation Game of Thrones she is portrayed by Samantha Spiro.

Character

Melessa is close with her firstborn son, Samwell Tarly, affectionately calling him "Sam".[1] Together they used to lull Sam's little brother, Dickon, to sleep.[4]

History

After the birth of Samwell, she gave her lord husband, Randyll Tarly, three girls in as many years (including Talla), then a second son, Dickon.[1]

Randyll once took Samwell with him on a voyage to the Arbor. After they came back, Melessa revealed to Samwell that his father wanted him to remain on the island and become Lord Paxter Redwyne's page and squire.[5] Randyll used to complain to Melessa about Samwell's cowardice.[6]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

When Samwell Tarly discusses his plan with Jon Snow to send Gilly and her babe to Horn Hill - in the guise of the babe being Sam's bastard offspring - he tells Jon that he knows that his mother would want him. Sam is confident that she will find some place for Gilly and it would not be as hard as serving Craster.[7]

When he meets with Samwell Tarly in the Lance, Ser Denys Mallister recalls that Sam's mother is a Florent.[8]

A Feast for Crows

While on the Blackbird, Sam thinks of his mother as he clings to the railing and watches waves breaking on a stony shore:

If she saw me in my blacks, it might even make her proud. "I am a man now, Mother,” I could tell her, "a steward and a man of the Night's Watch. My brothers call me Sam the Slayer sometimes."[5]
